Moments ago, the gavel fell on the start of the 2018 legislative session here in Cheyenne.
As you may have heard, this is a ‘budget session,’ meaning that we are scheduled to adjourn this year in JUST THREE WEEKS!
But thanks to your help, Stand-Your-Ground law is ready to go and has an impressive number of cosponsors backing it — from the House and Senate!
For those new to this concept, Stand-Your-Ground law removes the current requirement to retreat from a violent criminal before you can take defensive action.
To be clear, it doesn’t change the law regarding when you can use force, so any claim that we’re trying to make it legal to ‘shoot first and ask questions later’ is a lie.
Rather, it states that if you are allowed to use force under current law, you could do so without having to retreat.
To learn more about the bill, watch the video update that we’ve prepared for you below.
(WyGo’s Policy Advisor Aaron Dorr, with Stand-Your-Ground bill sponsor Senator Anthony Bouchard, with an update on Stand-Your-Ground legislation.)
The legislation also provides for critical criminal and civil immunity language to ensure that no one is arrested ‘just because’ following a shooting -– or can face a spurious civil suit, unless being found guilty in criminal court.
Anti-gun Democrats and some weak-kneed Republicans will likely invent all manner of reasons why this would be bad for Wyoming.
But they are wrong. It’s that simple.
Honestly, the fact that we are still having to address this issue here in Wyoming, when 35 other states already have this law on the books, is ridiculous!
Wyoming is the only western state to not have this law in place via legislation or case law — and that includes California and Washington!
We only have days to advance this bill, given the extremely short legislative timetable.
Between the Senate killing one of our gun bills last year, and the Governor vetoing the other, gun owners have to remind this legislature who they work for!
That starts with you sending your PRE-WRITTEN EMAIL, so please take action today!
For Freedom,
David Ball
President
P.S. The 2018 legislative session kicked off earlier today in Cheyenne, a session that is expected to last just THREE WEEKS!
Thankfully our Stand-Your-Ground legislation is fully drafted and already has a solid number of cosponsors in both chambers!
But given our state’s recent treatment of pro-gun legislation, as well as the extremely short 2018 session, we only have days to advance Stand-Your-Ground law!
Please send your lawmakers this PRE-WRITTEN EMAIL immediately!
And, if you can, please chip in $10 to help WyGo get this session off to a strong start!
