By now you’ve likely heard about the ruckus in Laramie last weekend, on the UW campus, the site of the GOP State Convention.
In case you missed it, GOP convention attendee Lyle Williams was charged by UW Police for open carrying on the property during the convention, and must appear in court soon.
His charge wasn’t based on criminal code, rather, he was charged with violating a UW administrative policy!
This, despite the fact that Wyoming code 6-8-104 clearly allows for open carry on college campuses, meaning that Williams was acting entirely within the law!
But that didn’t matter to UW President Laurie Nichols, who ensured that Williams was charged. You see, Nichols is a long-time anti-gun activist who lobbied to stop one of our gun bills last year.
As you may recall, Gov. Mead did her bidding and vetoed that bill –- ensuring that criminals have the upper hand when attacking ‘Gun Free Zones,’ where you are left helpless.
More, Nichols had her lawyers try to browbeat the WY GOP into ordering convention attendees to disarm.

But after consulting with their own attorneys, the WY GOP refused to back Nichols’s position, reportedly agreeing that state code allows for open carry on campus.
That’s why, on the day of the event with almost 50 citizens open carrying in defiance of Nichols’ illegal and unconstitutional powerplay, Nichols had to have the final say and had Williams charged.
But President Nichols has a problem on her hands; are UW campuses private or public property?
You see, on private property they have the right to do whatever they want. But of course private property means that they fund their own budget through their own means.
If they pay for it, they get to make the rules.
That’s just not the case for the University of Wyoming.
The truth is that YOU and I pay for virtually everything on all of their campuses, statewide!
According to the Casper Star Tribune, Wyoming taxpayers are funneling an enormous $380 MILLION DOLLARS to fund UW’s budget for the next two years.
But that’s not all.
At President Nichol’s urging, lawmakers approved an additional $85 MILLION DOLLAR appropriation for capitol improvements!
All told, over the next two-year cycle, Wyoming taxpayers are giving President Nichols a breathtaking $465 million dollars –- meaning that UW is anything but a private facility!
And how does UW thank the taxpayers of Wyoming who gave them this near HALF-BILLION dollar appropriation…
…by arresting one of those taxpayers who was exercising his Second Amendment rights in compliance with the laws of Wyoming!

And don’t think that this issue doesn’t apply to you if you’re not in college or have family members that are.
You see, with 43 college campuses and 7 community college institutions across the state serving as the venue for thousands of publicly attended events every year –- it’s very likely that you’ll be forced to disarm because of these policies.
After all, most of these other institutions pattern themselves after the University of Wyoming!
I don’t know about you, but the thought that a school can violate state code and spit in the face of the very taxpayers who fund their entire operation makes me mad!
The best way for you and I to do that, is to make sure our legislators know we are not going to support them by giving our money to UW as long as President Nichols is pursuing her anti-gun agenda.
